Lucky Somkhanda Gumbi (Born 1982) is a South African businessman, mining magnate, reality TV star and polygamist from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). He is well known for his lead role in the reality television show The Gumbis, which airs on SABC1.

Early Life and Background
Lucky Somkhanda Gumbi was born in 1982 in Jozini, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He comes from a poor and humble rural Zulu background. He was raised in Mtubatuba, which is on the far north of KZN, after his family had relocated there. His father died when he was young, as a result he struggled during childhood. At some point Lucky, his siblings and his mother had to go to bed on an empty stomach.
“My father died when I was young and as a result we struggled a lot growing up. My mother struggled to take care of us but she did her best and I took a decision that I will change the family situation.” Said Lucky Gumbi to Sowetan publication.
He embraces traditional Zulu cultural values, including polygamy, which he practices openly and promotes as requiring honesty and respect among all parties.

Lucky Gumbi built his wealth through entrepreneurship in mining, coal transportation, and construction. He is described as a self-made millionaire and mining magnate who rose from modest beginnings.
In 2018, he made headlines for spending around R260,000 on his second wife’s bridal shower and spend up to R4 million on the wedding. This made him a social media sensation and celebrity. After this fame, Gumbi was approached by reality television producers asking to make a reality television about his life. However, Gumbi was not interested since he is a private person, but later agreed and gave SABC1 permission to shoot in 2019.
In 2020, his reality television show The Gumbis made its debut appearance on SABC1, marketed as SABC1’s first ever reality television show. The reality show followed the life of Lucky Gumbi and his three wives, Bayede Cebekhulu Gumbi, Nombuso Malinga Gumbi and Zama-Lwandle Duma.
Personal Life and Polygamy

Lucky Somkhanda Gumbi is married to three wives and shares four children with the first two wives. His first wife is Bayede Cebekhulu Gumbi and it’s not known when he tied the knot with her. In 2018 he married his second wife Nombuso Malinga Gumbi in lavish ceremony which involved R260,000 bridal shower and R4 million wedding celebration.
On 29 June 2025, Gumbi married his third wife Zamalwandle Duma, a law graduate, in a lavish wedding ceremony. According to the wife, the wedding happened just few months after the two had known each other.
“Seven days into knowing me, he sent a letter to my parent… You meet someone at the end of October, and by December, he pays lobola,” Zamalwandle Duma said in The Citizen publication.
Gumbi’s wife don’t live in the same compound like what polygamist Musa Mseleku did with his wives. Instead, Gumbi has build them houses in different places where they wish to stay. Therefore, few months after marrying Zamalwandle Duma, Gumbi asked her where she would like to stay, and he build her a house in the location of her choice. After this marriage to Zamalwandle, he reportedly said he wasn’t going to take the fourth wife, his third wife is his last wife.
