Mduduzi Nombela (born 21 March 1976) is a South African actor, comedian and singer. He is best known for his lead role as Bab’ Phunyuka in etv former drama series Imbewu: the Seed.

Early Life of Mduduzi Nombela

Mduduzi Nxopham’lando Nombela was born on 21 March 1976 in a small township of uMlazi in KwaZulu Natal province. He grew up in uMlazi where he was raised by both his parents who were singers by professional. His mother was a soloist, his father was a band conductor. His father and brothers started a choir group which sang at weddings, funerals and various functions. Therefore, his family background had a major influence on him becoming an artist and actor when he became an adult.

Growing up in the family of singers, Mduduzi developed interest in arts at young age and began singing at school, winning for himself a lot of arts medals and awards back in school. While in high school, his teacher Dr. Gumede noticed his talent and gave young Mdu his first role in acting on his local film Life in the City.

Education and Acting Training

Mduduzi Nombela attended Makhumbuza high school in uMlazi township. After obtaining his matric, he relocated to Johannesburg where he obtained some training from established actors such as the late legendary actor Bab’ Gibson Kente, Bab’ Duma Ndlovu and Bab’ Bongi Ngema. This means Mduduzi has no qualification in acting.

Mduduzi Nombela had his debut professional role in acting when he played young boy Menthi in a film titled Life in the City. The film was produced by his high school teacher Dr. Bab’ Gumede who casted Mduduzi because he had noticed his talent. After this role, he had several roles in community theatres and later appeared several dramas such as in Uzalo as Bomu Cetshwayo marking his breakthrough in television acting.

In 2018, Mduduzi bagged a role in etv drama series Imbewu: the Seed where he portrayed Phunyuka, the loyal right hand man of a businessman, Ngcolosi Bhengu. He played this role until the last episode of Imbewu: the Seed in 2023 when the show ended. While still on Imbewu, Mdu appeared in romantic comedy film Love Lives Here in 2019. In 2020 he played the role of Daddy in the film The Road Less Cycled.

Mduduzi had a role of playing Vusi, a malume who negotiate lobola, in the romantic comedy movie Queen’s Lobola in late 2023 after the end of Imbewu: the Seed. He also appeared and starred in SABC1 drama series Amalanga Awafani season 1 as Benson which premiered April 2025. After his role on Amalanga Awafani, Mdu bagged a lead role of playing Qedusizi in etv drama series eGagasini: The Waves of Change which started in June 2026.

Personal Life of Mduduzi

Mduduzi Nombela is married to his longtime girlfriend from Mzimkhulu, KZN whose name is Innocentia. The two tied the knot in 2022 after Mduduzi fulfilled his lobola payments of 11 cows. According to several reports, Mduduzi even opted to increase the number of cows he was charged by his inlaws to show how much he appreciated his wife.

“He was supposed to pay 11 cows, but he went beyond and paid extra cows. Mduduzi loves his woman, he can do anything for her. That’s why he made sure his in-laws did not complain when he went to pay lobola,” said one source.
