He was raised by his mother and grandmother. He described his childhood as void of childhoodness because he was always working. This is when he learned that you have to work to obtain results. He attributes his discipline to his grandmother who taught him to be responsible.

Growing up, Black Coffee said his father was not present because he had remarried after divorce, and he lived with his other wife in Durban. He did mentioned that his father was good person but he was never present. Another aspect that shaped his childhood was growing up as a loner, doing all the chores alone. This made him to be anti-social and to learn to solve complex problems alone.

His love for music began when he was young because his uncle collected reggae records. On 11 February 1990, a tragic event that changed his life occured while attending the celebrations for Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. He was hit by a car, which had its lights off, after it plowed into people injuring Nkosinathi Maphumulo. This resulted in a brachial plexus injury, leaving him with permanent paralysis and no use of his left arm.

Education and Early Career

He studied music, including jazz, at Technikon Natal (now Durban University of Technology). He began DJing around 1994 while still in high school, initially playing at small clubs.
